I did a weekend driving trip to and from !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! back in July of 2016. On the way back on the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , I made the point to drop by !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! in !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ... which I had passed by so many times on my driving trips, and yet never visited until then.
These tunnels were built in 1914 as the final part of the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! as it blasted through the sides of Coquihalla Gorge, which is a 300ft deep channel of solid granite carved out by the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .
This impressive engineering challenge, just one amongst many needed to complete this railroad line, ensured that it is one of the most expensive ever completed.
The tunnels and nearby stations were named after !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! characters, because the chief engineer !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! was an avid reader of The Bard.
How he got down there, I have no idea.... Must have been able to take some unique pictures, though!
Parts of the tunnels were reinforced with concrete in the ‘30s
Somebody thought it was a good idea to run a railway through THIS terrain! Well, sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do....

Would you recommend I work this in as a stop on the PNW drive in the spring?

Depends on how many cars you are bringing, I guess. All 3 times now that I have been there, the parking lot was full and so I have had to park on the side of the road... which lacks shoulders or even curbs.
Here is the Google Street View of the parking lot: https://goo.gl/maps/HzYcyDe3yVy
Otherwise, it is a great stop, as it will only take your group ~30mins to go through all 3 tunnels and then back again. Perfect for stretching your legs.
Though, perhaps not so good as a purely restroom stop, as I remember the facilities to be rather... limited. For that purpose, visit Zopkios Rest Area a bit further back.

...yeah, I have never, EVER owned or even driven a car that can get anywhere close to something like that.
“The Hill” of BC-20 fame might be the maximum extent, and that is definitely on my radar. I am still holding out hope that as long as I keep paying my Provincial Taxes, it might eventually be paved...? Once it does, I am DEFINITELY there!

That’s what I want to use it for! I need to get a backroads mapbook, I see lots of photos and colloquial names of trails, but I need to figure out how to get to them.

That’s the closest to a local club. There are bc Jeep clubs for sure, and the http://bctoyota4wd.ca/ club is pretty active too.
I like the 4wheeldrive association because they are a paid club, the do trail work, and they are a tread lightly club.
I won’t put any club decals on if others are going to be out mud bogging and being jerks out there.
